
Stop Fighting With Your Glass Cuts
If you’ve ever tried cutting glass at room temperature, you know the frustration. One second everything looks fine, and the next, you’ve got a jagged chip or a nasty corner breakout that ruins the whole piece. It’s unpredictable. The problem is that when the cutting wheel hits the surface, it creates a zone of intense stress. Without a bit of heat, the glass just snaps wherever it wants. That’s why we use shortwave infrared (IR) heaters. We warm the glass up right before it hits the cutting head, and suddenly, everything just works. Why the heat actually matters Think of it this way: IR radiation sinks into the glass and gets the molecules moving. It relaxes the material. When the glass is warmer, it isn’t quite so brittle. The score line becomes cleaner. And when it’s time for the break? The crack actually stays on the line instead of jumping sideways into the wall of the container. It’s the difference between a surgical cut and a shattered mess. The gear you actually need On a fast production line, you don’t have time to wait around. You need heat, and you need it now. That’s why we go with quartz halogen lamps. They ramp up almost instantly. Slow-heating coils just won’t cut it here. You also have to make sure the lamps are positioned perfectly so the heat wraps around the whole container evenly. But be careful. If you crank the wattage too high just to speed things up, you’ll end up with “hot spots.” If one part of the glass is way hotter than the rest, it might just crack before it even reaches the cutter. It’s all a balancing act between your lamp power and how fast the conveyor is moving. Keeping it running Setting these up is pretty straightforward—they usually just drop right into the pre-cut tunnel. But here is the part people forget:clean your reflectors. Dust and tiny glass shards love to build up on those aluminum surfaces. When that happens, your IR efficiency tanks. The heat starts soaking into your machine frame instead of hitting the glass. Keep them polished, and your line will keep humming along.
