
Picking the Right Infrared Lamp for Your Bathroom
When you’re replacing a heating element in the bathroom, it’s tempting to just grab whatever fits the socket and call it a day. But here’s the thing: if you don’t match the wattage to the actual size of the room, you’re either going to waste a ton of electricity or end up shivering in the cold.
Getting the Power Right
Think of it as matching the tool to the job. If you’ve got a tiny powder room—something under 4m²—you really only need a 250W to 400W lamp. Any more than that and you’ll basically be turning your bathroom into a sauna. But for those big master baths (we’re talking 8m² to 12m²), you’ll want to step it up to 600W or even 1000W. And look, don’t try to “save money” by going too low. If the lamp is underpowered, it has to run constantly to keep you warm. That puts a huge strain on the filament and it’ll burn out way faster. On the flip side, going way too high can trip your breakers if your wiring isn’t built for it. Not a great way to start your morning.
Dealing with Steam and Humidity
Bathrooms are brutal on electronics. Between the shower steam and the humidity, moisture gets everywhere. That’s why we stick with IP65-rated housings. It’s basically a shield that keeps the dampness away from the electrical connections. If you use a standard lamp without that protection, the terminals will corrode. Then you get arcing, and then—pop—your lamp is dead. We use shortwave infrared because it’s just… faster. Instead of trying to heat up all the air in the room, it hits your skin and the surfaces directly. You flip the switch, and you feel the heat instantly.
The Trade-off: Heat vs. Lifespan
There is a catch, though. The more powerful the lamp, the more intense the heat. That’s great for warming up quickly, but it’s tough on the quartz glass. Make sure your fixtures have room to breathe. If the heat gets trapped around the base, the seal starts to degrade. It’s a good habit to check your gaskets once a year. Just a quick look to make sure that IP65 seal is still tight, and you’re good to go.
