
Why Your Bathroom Heater Keeps Dying (and How to Fix It)
You know those old-school lamp heaters? The ones that look like giant lightbulbs? They’re great until they aren’t. Most of them just aren’t built for the reality of a bathroom. Between the constant steam and the occasional splash, they tend to give up the ghost pretty quickly. That’s why we’re moving everyone over to IP65-rated infrared heaters. It’s not about making the room look fancy; it’s about making sure your heater doesn’t short out the moment you take a hot shower.
The Deal with IP65 and Humidity
If you see “IP65” on a box, it basically means the unit is sealed tight. Dust can’t get in, and water can’t get in—even if it’s spraying from different angles. Here’s the thing: in a standard heater, steam sneaks into the housing and messes with the electrical terminals. That’s why so many cheap heaters just “burn out” when the humidity hits 90%. By sealing the guts of the machine, we keep the moisture out and the heat on.
How Infrared Actually Works
Most heaters try to warm up the air in the room. But in a bathroom, that’s a losing battle. You’ve got vents pulling air out and doors opening and closing. The heat just vanishes. Infrared is different. It doesn’t care about the air. It sends out energy that warms you and the surfaces around you directly. It’s instant. You step in, you feel the warmth immediately. Depending on how far away the heater is from where you’re standing, we use either short-wave or medium-wave emitters. Short-wave is the fastest, though we have to seal it a bit tighter so you aren’t blinded by the glare.
The Practical Stuff (And the Gotchas)
Before you go buying one, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. First, you can’t just plug these into a regular wall socket and call it a day. They pull a lot of power to get that “instant” heat, so you’ll need a dedicated circuit. Check your breakers first, or you’ll be flipping the switch back on every ten minutes. Also, because of that heavy-duty waterproof seal, these units are a bit bulkier than the flimsy ones. Give yourself some extra room when you’re mounting them to the wall or ceiling. And a quick warning: just because it’s waterproof doesn’t mean it’s magic. If you mount it too close to a wooden beam or a plastic panel, you’re going to scorch the material. Stick to the clearance gaps in the spec sheet. Trust me on this one.
